In February, trainees at the PFP Academy took part in a practical session on bamboo propagation as part of the Environmental Conservation and Climate Resilience module.

Bamboo was selected because it is both climate-resilient and environmentally friendly. It is also well suited to the conditions at the Arise Centre, where there is access to water to support its growth.

The session focused on giving trainees practical experience. They learned how bamboo can be propagated and gained an understanding of how it could be used in their local context.

Following this session, a plan has been developed for trainees to establish a bamboo nursery on-site. This nursery will act as a space for continued learning and small-scale enterprise. The bamboo that is propagated will be sold, offering trainees a chance to develop basic entrepreneurial skills.

This activity links environmental learning with practical application and introduces an approach that combines conservation with opportunities to earn an income. It also offers a starting point for thinking about how climate-conscious approaches can support livelihoods.

Stay tuned for further updates on the development of the bamboo nursery, as well as our upcoming match-funded campaign, Going Green, taking place from 22nd to 29th April. During this campaign, we will be sharing further stories and plans to bring more green skills training and climate solutions to communities in Mbita, Kenya.
