From Skills Training to Small Business Growth

Salma Grace is a graduate of the Arise Centre who pursued pastry preparation during the six-week master classes held from October to November. After successfully completing the programme and graduating in November, she was invited to assist in catering services during UHC Day, gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Determined to build on the skills she had acquired, Salma used her stipend to start a cookie business. She made an initial investment in oven leasing and registered to book the oven from the 15th to the 17th of December, during which she baked ginger cinnamon cookies.

Her first batch marked a promising start. With an investment of KSh 800, she produced cookies worth KSh 1,750. Encouraged by the results, she reinvested in her second batch, purchasing ingredients worth KSh 1,200 and producing cookies valued at KSh 2,470.

Later in December, Salma increased her investment to KSh 1,500 and prepared cookies worth KSh 3,260. This steady growth demonstrates her commitment to reinvesting in her business and building it step by step.

Today, Salma has gained repeat customers who continue to demand more of her products, showing clear potential for continued growth. Her journey highlights how practical skills training, combined with determination and opportunity, can support the creation of sustainable livelihoods.
