The Reintegration of Teen Mothers into Education

Over the past month, we held a two-day counselling session for young mothers focused on supporting their reintegration back into education. The sessions were led by Ministry of Health counsellors and nurses, with parents and caregivers also taking part. Together, they created a safe space for the young mothers to openly discuss the challenges they face and the support they need as they rebuild their lives and prepare to return to school.

Following the counselling sessions, 10 teen mothers were successfully readmitted to school and officially returned to learning last Thursday and Friday. Of these, 7 girls rejoined high school, 2 joined junior secondary school, and 1 enrolled in vocational training after it was determined she could not manage the high school curriculum under the 8-4-4 system, which is currently being phased out. For everyone involved, it was an emotional and hopeful moment, marking a major turning point and a fresh start after leaving school due to early motherhood.

To support their transition back into the classroom, PFP provided each girl with dignity packs and basic learning materials to help them settle back into school more comfortably. This support was made possible through funding from the Souter Charitable Trust.

Beyond returning to school, the girls continue to receive support both at home and within their communities. Caregivers are helping by providing childcare and ensuring both the young mothers and their children receive adequate nutrition, while Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and village elders continue to follow up and support the girls as they settle back into school and community life.

This is only the beginning of their journey back into education. With continued support from families, schools, and the wider community, the hope is that these young mothers will remain in school, continue rebuilding their confidence, and successfully complete their studies.
